Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library

Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library is located on Nakanoshima in Kita Ward, Osaka City, and together with the Osaka Prefectural Central Library, forms one of the two most important libraries run by the Osaka Prefecture. Its classic, vintage building also serves as a tourist attraction, making it one of the city's most beloved structures among visitors. It was funded by the 15th-generation Sumitomo head, Sumitomo Tomoito (1864–1926), with the architectural design carried out by engineers Tatsuno Kingo and Hidaka Yutaka from the temporary construction department of the Sumitomo Head Office. The library was first built in 1904, underwent an expansion in 1922, gradually taking on its current scale, and was designated by the Japanese government as an Important Cultural Property in 1974.

Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library is a Neo-Baroque style building constructed with three stories of stone walls and a semi-circular copper roof. Four large pillars stand at the main entrance, evoking the image of an ancient Greek temple. Inside, the library primarily offers books and magazines related to Osaka, classical literature, and the business field. Its Osaka-related collection covers various subjects such as literature, history, politics, and economics, making it the best place for visitors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the city. The classical books section not only houses Japanese classical works from various regions but also treasures classical texts from China and Korea, along with related publications.
