Dotonbori Canal

In 1612, Ani Yasui Dōton, Yasui Dōbutsu, and Andō Fujiyoshi of Hirano-go funded the construction of a canal in Osaka using their personal wealth. The project was completed in 1615. In recognition of Dōton’s contribution, Matsudaira Tadamasa named the canal Dōtonbori. To this day, monuments commemorating Yasui Dōton and Dōbutsu still stand along the canal’s banks. After the canal was completed, numerous entertainment venues were established along its shores, including theaters such as Naka-za, Sumi-za, Takebe-za, Naniwa-za, Benten-za, and Asahi-za, as well as open-air cafés and restaurants. Gradually, it became one of Osaka’s most popular tourist destinations.

Today, Dotonbori is not only a beloved attraction in Osaka but also a major commercial district in the city. The large neon signs along the canal are among Osaka’s most iconic landmarks. The area features bustling shopping streets and numerous eateries along both sides of the canal. A wharf has also been built, allowing visitors to enjoy a refreshing boat ride while taking in the scenic views along the water—making for a very pleasant experience. In addition, about 20 events are held along the Dotonbori Canal each year, each attracting wide acclaim from both locals and tourists.
