The National Museum of Art is located on Nakanoshima Island in Kita Ward, Osaka City, Japan. It opened to the public in 1977 and is one of Japan’s four national art museums. The building it occupies was originally the site of the Osaka Expo Museum of Fine Arts. Initially, most of the museum’s collection was donated. Over the years through continued acquisition and development, it has become one of Japan’s most popular art museums.

The National Museum of Art primarily houses post-war Japanese artworks. Its current collection includes 6,109 pieces, comprising 2,190 prints, 751 watercolors and drawings, and 605 photographs—offering a rich variety of artistic styles. About 70% of the collection consists of works on paper, while the remaining 30% includes 593 oil paintings, among which 26 are mineral pigment paintings. Additionally, there are 319 sculptures, 76 craft works, and a small selection of industrial design items (such as furniture and lighting fixtures). The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with the latest admission at 16:30. On Fridays, closing time is extended to 19:00.
