Japan Mint

The head office of the Japan Mint is located in Tennōji, Kita-ku, Osaka City. As an independent administrative institution, it was established in 1871. With its Western-style exterior and cutting-edge European minting equipment, it was renamed the “Japan Mint” in 1877, a name that has been used ever since.

In addition to manufacturing currency, the Japan Mint also produces medals, commemorative awards, and other metal crafts, analyzes and tests raw metals and minerals, refines precious metal materials, and provides certification of the fineness of precious metal products. In the past, residual gas from coin production was reused to light gas lamps inside and around the factory, creating a brightly lit environment that attracted many visitors. At the Mint, visitors can not only view various displays of currency but also observe the entire coin production process on-site. Adjacent to the Mint is the Mint Museum, which opened in 1971. The museum exhibits over 4,500 types of coins from various countries and periods around the world, including Japan, as well as related historical documents. There are also some archival materials documenting anecdotes since the museum's establishment.

Aside from the Mint Museum, the Japan Mint has about 120 varieties and 400 cherry blossom trees. Every year in mid-April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, a hanami event is held where visitors can stroll through the “cherry blossom tunnel.” During this time, the site becomes crowded with visitors and is recognized as one of Osaka’s most famous cherry blossom avenues. Walking along the cherry blossom path allows you to fully enjoy the endless charm of the blossoms.
