Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Japan, also known as Tenmangū-san. The original shrine building was constructed in 949 AD by order of Emperor Murakami to appease the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane. Having suffered several fires, the current main hall and entrance gate were rebuilt in 1845.

It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, a 10th-century scholar regarded as the "God of Scholarship." Every July, the shrine hosts Osaka’s most grand traditional festival — the Tenjin Matsuri, which is one of Japan’s three major traditional festivals, featuring lively boat processions.
