Garden of Luís de Camões

The Garden of Luís de Camões was built in the late 19th century and is located on the former site of the Estrada Nova de Luís de Camões. In 1898, authorities constructed this tree-lined boulevard to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's fleet arriving in India. The boulevard stretches 500 meters in length and is 65 meters wide, lined on both sides with false banyan trees that cast dappled shade, creating a pastoral ambiance. Some of the ancient trees still stand there today, bearing witness to over a century of change. With the passage of time, the boulevard no longer exists, and various buildings such as schools, hotels, and the Public Security Police Station have been erected on the original site. These two gardens are the remaining green spaces of what was once this “public promenade.”

The Garden of Luís de Camões covers a small area of just 7,050 square meters and consists of two square plots. Within the garden stands a bronze bust of Vasco da Gama, created by sculptor Tomás da Costa 91 years ago (unveiled on January 31, 1911), which commemorates the explorer. Beneath the bust is an obelisk stone tablet and several bas-reliefs.

The garden underwent renovation in 1997, during which a wave-shaped fountain was built at the lower part of the park, along with pathways and pavilions for public rest. At the upper part of the park, a water pool and fountain were constructed around the bust, adding to the garden’s elegance. The children’s playground was also refurbished, with a variety of new play equipment added, making it one of the Macau Peninsula’s children’s playgrounds with the most facilities—and one of the most frequently used by children.
