Taipa Square

Taipa Square is located in the St. Lazarus Parish of Macau. The site was originally the Taipa Sports Ground and is now the largest square in Macau. The government began construction in May 2005, demolishing the sports ground and integrating a section of Avenida de Holland between the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Taipa Arts and Cultural Centre into Taipa Square. The underground features a driveway. The project was completed and officially opened to traffic on July 22, 2007. The entire project was overseen by individuals including Choi Sai Ieong, Carlos Marreiros, and马斯华, with a total construction and planning cost of 160 million Macanese patacas.

Covering an area of 13,260 square meters, the surface of Taipa Square is fully paved with Portuguese-style cobblestones. The underground level includes a 5-meter-high parking garage that can accommodate over 60 tour buses. The square features leisure areas, a dining and entertainment center, and an underground mall. Additionally, there is a “U”-shaped vehicular tunnel beneath the square, replacing the section of Avenida de Holland that was integrated into the square. This 200-meter-long underground tunnel is 8 meters wide, with two lanes each approximately 4 meters wide and one lane for passing. It also includes 24-hour surveillance, automatic ventilation systems, and air quality sensors to ensure proper airflow.

This redevelopment project is the largest urban renewal initiative by the Macau government following the revitalization of Senado Square. Its aim is to integrate the Taipa and St. Lazarus Parish areas, along with landmarks such as the Macao Museum and the Ruins of St. Paul’s, into a new cultural hub and key tourist destination in Macau.
