Rua da Vitória Garden

Located at the southern foot of Guia Hill on the Macau Peninsula, Rua da Vitória Garden in Macau lies between Avenida de Sidónio Pais and Rua da Vitória. Its historical significance has been recognized by the Macau government. Covering an area of approximately 2,000 square meters, the garden is smaller than other parks in Macau. Yet, situated in the bustling central district of the city, it offers a tranquil space for the public.

Built in the late 19th century, Rua da Vitória Garden is situated between Avenida de Sidónio Pais and Rua da Vitória, on the site of the former “Estrada de Carlos da Maia.” In 1898, authorities constructed this tree-lined avenue to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s fleet arriving in India. The avenue stretches 500 meters in length and 65 meters in width, lined on both sides with false banyan trees that cast dappled shade, evoking a pastoral ambiance. To this day, some of the ancient trees still stand there, bearing witness to a century of change. With the passage of time, the tree-lined avenue no longer exists, and various structures such as schools, hotels, and the Public Security Police headquarters have been built on the original site. These two gardens are the only remaining structures from that “public promenade.”
