The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is a base for patriotic education.

Located at 175 Tung Hei Road, Shau Kei Wan, the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence covers an area of approximately 34,200 square meters. It is one of the branch museums of the Hong Kong Museum of History and is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The museum was built from the century-old former Lei Yue Mun Fort. This site was once the most extensive defence installation in Hong Kong over a hundred years ago and also played a significant role in the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941. Today, the fort has been converted into a museum that conserves and exhibits six centuries of Hong Kong’s coastal defence heritage.

The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is mainly divided into three areas: the reception area, the Redoubt, and the Heritage Trail, all renovated from the nearly 100-year-old Lei Yue Mun Fort. The museum’s historic buildings feature a large open-air plaza, a unique architectural design, and other original construction materials, providing visitors with a comfortable and nostalgic experience. The Redoubt has been converted into permanent exhibition galleries, chronicling Hong Kong’s defence history from the Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, pre-colonial period, Japanese occupation, post-colonial period, to the post-handover era.

The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence displays over 400 artefacts, all related to Hong Kong’s coastal defence history, including firearms, cannons, small arms, military uniforms, and textiles. All these collections belong to the Hong Kong Museum of History, and more than 20 precious artefacts have been loaned from cultural and museum institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong.
