Film enthusiasts, cinephiles, or anyone interested in Hong Kong cinema should make a trip to the Hong Kong Film Archive. Established to preserve precious film prints, related audiovisual materials, film publications, and more, the Archive regularly hosts film retrospectives, exhibitions, and screenings of classic films from both past and present, China and abroad.

Located at 50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong Island, the Hong Kong Film Archive is a four-storey building with a total floor area of 7,200 square metres. The structure is divided into two parts, with half of each floor used as storage for collections. The other half houses exhibition halls, a cinema, and a resource centre for reference use. The Archive promotes Hong Kong’s film art to the public and provides extensive materials for filmmakers and researchers. It currently holds a collection of over 5,600 film prints, the oldest being a scenic short film shot in Hong Kong by the American Edison Company in 1898. The collection also includes numerous locally produced films, such as the acclaimed wartime patriotic masterpiece *Solemn Silence* (孤岛天堂) directed by Cai Chusheng in 1939, and *The Sisters of the Southern Land* (南国姊妹花) starring legendary actress Hu Die and actor Wu Cho-fan.

The Hong Kong Film Archive also houses a wealth of film-related materials, including still photographs, scripts, movie posters, original film soundtracks, souvenir publications, contracts, film awards, props, and more. This rich and invaluable collection has earned the Archive recognition from *Time Magazine* as — one of the greatest visual art treasures in Hong Kong and Asia, and one of the “25 Experiences in Asia That Shouldn’t Be Missed.”
