Sai Wan Ho Promenade

Hong Kong’s Sai Wan Ho area spans from Hong Lok Road in the west to Hoi On Street in the east. The newly reclaimed land north of Tai On Building is commonly known as Lei King Wan.

The Swire Group built staff quarters for its Taikoo Dockyard in Sai Wan Ho, which were completed in 1909 and could accommodate over 10,000 people. By the 1960s, Shau Kei Wan and Sai Wan Ho were both developed. The Tai On Building, developed by The Land Investment and completed in 1968, was once a local landmark as it stood along the waterfront at that time.

Until 1979, the Tai On Building remained on the waterfront. However, entering the 1980s, due to several relocations of the Shau Kei Wan Ferry Pier and the construction of the Island Eastern Corridor, the waterfront of Sai Wan Ho continued to shift northward. Today, the entire Lei King Wan area consists of land reclaimed from the sea.

Going uphill from Shing On Street, the area was a squatter settlement before the 1980s, including villages such as Shing On Tsuen, Holy Cross Path Village, O Pui Lung Tsuen, and Ma Shan Tsuen. However, in 1989, the government resumed the land and built the public housing estate — Yiu Tung Estate.
