Hong Kong's Amah Rock

Amah Rock (AmahRock) is situated on a small hill above Hung Mui Kuk in Sha Tin District, New Territories, Hong Kong, at an altitude of approximately 250 meters. It is a small peak in the Lion Rock range. Amah Rock is a well-known landmark in Sha Tin. In the 2007 "Appreciate the Natural Beauty of Rocks – Hong Kong’s Most Beautiful Rock" campaign, Amah Rock was awarded the top spot.

Amah Mountain is a type of granite weathering rock formation known as a tor, while Amah Rock was originally a massive boulder whose joints eroded and broke apart to form upright stone pillars or blocks. The large rock atop the peak stands about 15 meters tall, resembling the human body. On this large rock sit two stones, one large and one small, standing side by side, shaped like a woman carrying a child on her back. The “mother’s” neck and the “child” originated from horizontal joints in the rock, while the body parts were formed by vertical joints. The mother and child stand firmly atop the peak, gazing down at the Shing Mun River and the Sha Tin New Town area. Amah Rock is slightly bent forward, unmoving, its form exuding a sense of longing. It is a popular sightseeing spot in the region and a frequent destination for locals’ hiking and outdoor excursions.
