Lion Rock Country Park

Established on June 24, 1977, Lion Rock Country Park is one of the first three country parks designated in Hong Kong. It spans across Wong Tai Sin District in Kowloon and Sha Tin District in the New Territories, covering an area of 5.57 square kilometers. The park includes the area around Lion Rock, extending west to Tai Po Road where it connects with Kam Shan Country Park, and east to Shatin Pass where it connects with Ma On Shan Country Park.

Lion Rock is a long, narrow ridge stretching from east to west, with steeper southern slopes that have thinner vegetation. In contrast, its northern slopes are quite different — they not only boast abundant water sources but also host a rich variety of plant life. Geologically, Lion Rock Country Park, like the neighboring Kam Shan Country Park, was formed during the Upper Jurassic period, with common granite types including Song Gang Granite, Cheung Chau Granite, and Ma On Shan Granite. Notable attractions in the park include the majestic and steep Lion Rock, the touching and legendary Lover’s Rock, and Beacon Hill, which is said to have been used for sending signals in the past. Additionally, some of Hong Kong’s famous long-distance hiking trails pass through the park, such as the MacLehose Trail and the Wilson Trail. Though not particularly large in area, the park features two nature trails: Eagle’s Nest Nature Trail and Hung Mui Kuk Nature Trail.

At the foot of Lion Rock lies a vast expanse of lush garden woods and barbecue sites. The newly renovated barbecue area is one of the most attractive spots for barbecuing in Hong Kong, featuring 26 barbecue pits, each equipped with comfortable chairs and spacious tables. A tree-lined hiking trail leads directly up to Lion Rock from the barbecue site.
