Penfold Park

Penfold Park is a park located in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, completed in 1978. Covering an area of over 20 acres, the park is situated in the middle of the Sha Tin Racecourse track. Funded and managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, it was named after the former Hong Kong Jockey Club General Manager, Major-General Penfold. Aside from wooded areas and lawns, the park's facilities also include an artificial lake, a lakefront trail, Chinese-style pavilions, a children’s playground, a botanical maze, and a zoo, making it a habitat for numerous birds. According to information provided by birdwatchers, over 67 species of wild birds inhabit the park.

In 1997, to celebrate the significant occasion of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland on July 1, the Hong Kong Jockey Club specially invited nearly 100 charitable beneficiaries to each paint a mural on the theme of “carousel.” To allow the public to appreciate these colorful and meaningful artworks, the Jockey Club specially framed the murals and exhibited them in the pedestrian tunnel connecting Sha Tin’s Penfold Park and the racecourse for visitors to enjoy.

In 2008, Hong Kong co-hosted the equestrian events of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, requisitioning land from Penfold Park to convert it into quarantine stables and equestrian practice grounds. After the conclusion of the Olympic equestrian events, the park reopened to the public on January 17, 2009. The cauldron used for the Olympic equestrian torch lighting ceremony was permanently placed in Penfold Park for public viewing.
