In addition to enshrining Hau Wong, the Tai Wai Village Hau Wong Temple also honors Che Tai Kwong Shing, Tak Fu Earth God, the 29 founding ancestors of the village, and three heroes who contributed to the walled village. Legend has it that Hau Wong was Yang Liangjie, the imperial uncle of Emperor Duzong of the Song Dynasty. In the late Southern Song Dynasty, Wen Tianxiang and Lu Xiufu enthroned Prince Yi, Xiangzong, who died in Gangzhou. Xiufu then enthroned Prince Guang, Bingzong, on Yashan. Yang Liangjie led the people southward to welcome the emperor but was chased by Yuan troops. Xiufu carried the emperor and jumped into the sea to die. Yang Liangjie died of overwork in the Kwun Fu Market. However, there is still doubt about Hau Wong’s true identity.

In the early days, the temple served almost as a common ancestral hall and village office for the residents of Tai Wai. All major and minor disputes in the village were handled by the Hau Wong Temple until the Tai Wai Village Office was completed in 1976 and took over village affairs. The Hau Wong Temple is one of the most popular temples in Sha Tin District.
