Lingnan Theological Seminary

Lingnan Theological Seminary is an Asian regional seminary jointly established on July 1, 1977, by four churches: The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod, The Chinese Rhenish Church Hong Kong Synod, The Tsung Tsin Mission of Hong Kong, and The Lutheran Church in Taiwan. It is located at 50 To Fung Shan Road, Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong. The institution was first established in 1913 in Shekou, Huangpi, Hubei, China (now Huangpi District, Wuhan), under the China Lutheran Church. In late 1948, due to the turbulent political situation on the mainland, the seminary relocated to Hong Kong and became the theological education institution of The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod. Over the 15 years since the completion of its new campus, the number of seminarians has grown from several dozen to over 300, the full-time faculty has increased to more than 20, and the library collection has expanded from 50,000 to over 80,000 volumes, making it the largest theological library among Chinese-language seminaries worldwide.

History

Lingnan Theological Seminary is not just another "new" seminary; it boasts a long historical background and a profound theological tradition. Originally known as the renowned "Lingnan Theological Seminary" across Southeast Asia, the institution was founded in 1913 in Shekou, Huangpi, Hubei, China (now Huangpi District, Wuhan), under the China Lutheran Church. In late 1948, due to the unstable situation on the mainland, the seminary moved to Hong Kong and became the theological education arm of The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod. Over its 64-year history, Lingnan Theological Seminary trained hundreds of full-time pastors and educated thousands of lay leaders for the Chinese church. It made significant contributions in supplying personnel, preserving orthodox faith, developing contextual theology, and promoting church cooperation.
