Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (English name: Art Museum The Chinese University of Hong Kong), located at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was established in 1971 and is one of Hong Kong’s public museums.

Introduction

Based on its collection and the loan of premium cultural relics, the museum is dedicated to promoting Chinese culture. It provides historical materials for interdisciplinary research on Chinese art conducted by other departments of the university in the social, cultural, technical, and historical contexts, facilitates academic exchanges between China and abroad, and contributes to society. The museum has published numerous works, covering excavated relics, calligraphy and paintings, ceramics, jade artifacts, lacquerware, seals, and more. In addition, it houses a reference library that includes many albums, donated reference books, as well as a database of images of cultural relics.

To strengthen ties with the community, the Museum Friends Association was established in 1981. Its members are a group of individuals who are passionate about Chinese art and supportive of the museum’s work. They actively organize lectures or workshops, docent training courses, and cultural relic tour groups, among other activities. Moreover, the museum itself also actively collaborates with other museums, such as the Fujita Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, the Yale University Art Gallery in the United States, the Palace Museum, the Shanghai Museum, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, the Nanjing Museum, the Hubei Provincial Museum, the Guangdong Provincial Museum, the Guangzhou Museum of Art, the Jiangxi Provincial Museum, the Hunan Provincial Museum, and the Peking University Library.

Mission

As a component unit of the Institute of Chinese Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the museum is committed to the collection, preservation, research, and exhibition of Chinese cultural relics. It introduces the long-standing Chinese art, humanistic spirit, and cultural heritage to members of the university and the public of Hong Kong. Based on its collection and the loan of premium cultural relics, the museum conducts academic research and promotes exchanges. As a teaching museum of the university, the Art Museum works closely with the Department of Fine Arts, providing in-depth, hands-on research in museology and art history. It also collaborates with other departments of the university to develop interdisciplinary studies on Chinese art in the social, cultural, technical, and historical fields.

Library

The museum has a reference library that houses albums exchanged and donated by domestic and international museums and collectors. In addition, there is a database of images of cultural relics, which includes photographs and slides of Chinese artworks from around the world, providing relevant references for researchers of Chinese art and art history.

Conservation Studio

In 1997, the museum set up a conservation studio, including facilities for the conservation of cultural relics and calligraphy and paintings, a photography room, and a woodworking room. On one hand, it provides technical assistance for the museum’s exhibitions, and on the other hand, it conducts research on the preservation and restoration of calligraphy, paintings, and cultural relics.

Museum Friends Association

A group of individuals who love Chinese art and support the museum’s work established the Friends Association in 1981. They actively participate in and promote the museum’s activities. The association has donated many cultural relics to the museum and has provided scholarships to students in the university’s art department. In recent years, the number of members has continued to grow, activities have become increasingly active, and it plays an important role in strengthening the museum’s connection with society.

Role in teaching

As a university museum, staff of the museum actively participate in teaching. The museum provides tangible teaching materials on Chinese history and culture for relevant departments, especially maintaining close ties with the art department. In addition to participating in the teaching of art history, it offers internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in the department. Furthermore, it provides exhibition space annually for the art department’s graduation project shows.
