Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change

- The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (English: Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, abbreviation: MoCC) is located on the 8th floor of the Kadoorie Institute, Chinese University of Hong Kong, in Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin District, New Territories, Hong Kong. Covering an area of 800 square meters, it showcases through multimedia exhibitions the climate change research findings from Hong Kong and around the world, as well as plant and animal specimens, photos, and videos collected by Hong Kong polar explorer Rebecca Lee in Mount Everest, Antarctica, and the Arctic. - The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change is one of the key projects under the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s “Action for Sustainability” initiative, and it officially opened on December 16, 2013.

Exhibition Content

Polar Gallery. The exhibits in the Polar Gallery are mainly donated by Rebecca Lee, including photos and materials she collected over the years through fieldwork in the Antarctic, Arctic, and Mount Everest, as well as from online sources at various research centers in Mainland China.

Satellite Remote Sensing and Environmental Monitoring. Satellite Remote Sensing and Environmental Monitoring displays various types of geographic information and satellite images related to meteorology, oceans, and land changes. It introduces how geographic information science is applied in areas such as air pollution monitoring, marine oil spill analysis, sustainable urban and housing design, virtual geographic environments, and three-dimensional environmental monitoring/simulation.

Innovative Research at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Innovative Research at The Chinese University of Hong Kong showcases the university’s groundbreaking research in the fields of environment, energy, and sustainable development, including biofuels, solar photovoltaics, air and water purification through photocatalytic oxidation, and sustainable urban design and planning.

- Eco Corner. - Eco Corner showcases - its own environmental protection projects as well as community initiatives by its charitable trust.

History

Since her first polar exploration in 1987, polar explorer Rebecca Lee has been advocating for the establishment of a polar-themed museum in Hong Kong to introduce the conditions of the Antarctic and Arctic to the public, and to inspire the younger generation’s interest in science. She hopes to encourage junior high school students interested in natural sciences to continue studying these subjects when they move on to senior high school and university.

In 1997, Rebecca Lee founded the Polar Museum Foundation and served as its director. She persistently sought to establish the museum but was not successful for a long time and even considered giving up. It wasn’t until 2010, when she gave a speech at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and shared her vision with then-president Joseph Sung, that she gained his support. Later, she also successfully persuaded - to donate HK$54 million for the construction of the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change.
