Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum

The Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum is located in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is one of the five branch museums of the Hong Kong Museum of History and is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The structure is a declared monument of Hong Kong. According to archaeologists, the tomb was built during the Eastern Han Dynasty, between 25 and 220 AD.

A total of 58 artifacts were unearthed from the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb, including at least 33 intact items such as building models, various pottery pieces, and bronze ware. However, no human remains were found in the tomb. The layout of the tomb is cross-shaped, consisting of four chambers. The tomb chambers are brick-structured tombs, built with bricks measuring 40 cm in length, 20 cm in width, and 5 cm in thickness. These bricks feature more than 10 different patterns and the inscription “大吉番禺” (Great Fortune, Panyu). The entrance passage of the tomb had already been damaged before its official excavation.

To maintain stable temperature and humidity levels within the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum, the tomb chambers are not open to the public. However, visitors can peek inside through glass panels installed at the entrance of the corridor. The exhibition hall next to the tomb displays pottery and bronze ware excavated from the site, as well as two exhibitions titled “Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb” and “Han Culture in South China.” These exhibitions introduce the geographical environment of the tomb, the structure of the chambers, the discovery process, and the culture of the Lingnan region during the Han Dynasty.
