The Taxkorgan Port Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Taxkorgan Port is an important trade passage between China and Mongolia. After the founding of New China, trade between the two countries developed. In the early 1960s, trade between Taxkorgan and Bulgan was suspended. On July 20, 1989, Taxkorgan Port was approved by the state to open to the outside world. In 1991, the governments of China and Mongolia signed an agreement designating the port as a bilateral seasonal port, allowing the passage of personnel, goods, and transport vehicles from both countries.

Taxkorgan Port is a historic trade route between China and Mongolia. In July 1989, it was opened to the outside world with approval from the State Council. It has an annual freight capacity of 50,000 tons and can handle 30,000 passengers.

The port is a seasonal one, open from the 20th to the 30th of each month between April and December every year. An international passenger bus service between Qinghe County and Bulgan has now been launched. Currently, the two countries are preparing to convert the Taxkorgan–Bulgan Port into a year-round passage.

Taxkorgan Port is equipped with a border inspection station. Customs and other inspection personnel are dispatched by relevant departments in the Altay region during the port’s operating period. The port has built a joint office and reception complex building covering 2,222 square meters, an inspection hall of 350 square meters, and supporting base facilities. Since its opening, it has handled a total of 340,000 inbound and outbound personnel and 61,000 transport vehicles. In 2002 alone, there were 38,000 inbound and outbound travelers, 9,769 vehicles, and 17,000 tons of imports and exports.

In 2005, following state leaders Hu Jintao and —’s visit to Mongolia, and through bilateral consultations, China designated Mongolia as an approved destination for Chinese citizens traveling at their own expense. Taxkorgan Port is open from April to October each year, opening in the first half of the month and closing in the second half. In 2011, Taxkorgan Port will be opened to third countries and operate year-round.
