Shaya County is situated in the central northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert — China’s largest and the world’s second-largest shifting desert. The county town is 40 kilometers from the desert.
Crossing the desert from Bostan Village on the southern bank of the Tarim River in Shaya County to Yutian County in the Hotan region spans about 400 kilometers, which is the widest part of this desert and highly representative for adventure tourism crossings. Activities here include camel riding, climbing watchtowers, sandboarding, sand bathing, sand therapy, beach volleyball, hot air balloon rides, off-road desert vehicle races, and organizing bonfire parties. In recent years, several domestic and international teams and individuals have successfully completed adventure crossings through the desert.
