Kekeya Ecological Tourism Scenic Area

Kekeya Ecological Tourism Scenic Area is located on the wasteland at the junction of the eastern suburbs of Aksu City and Wensu County, about 10 kilometers from downtown Aksu. The entire scenic area is connected by asphalt roads, making transportation convenient.

Since 1986, citizens of all ethnic groups, government officials, workers, students, as well as military personnel, have participated in large-scale voluntary tree planting efforts. With over 600,000 laborers involved over 15 years, they planted more than 2.6 million trees and afforested over 40,000 acres, eventually creating a green Great Wall on the ancient wasteland and vast saline-alkali land. This significantly reduced wind and sand disasters and improved the urban ecological environment. In 1996, it was listed among the Global 500 by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The scenic area is centered around a 25-kilometer-long, 300-meter-wide artificial shelterbelt. Within the area, lush trees, birdsong, and floral scents abound. Under the blue sky stands the Pioneer Ox sculpture, symbolizing the spirit of Kekeya. The landscape features well-spaced residential areas, fruitful grapevines, as well as nurseries and orchards, all carrying profound natural and cultural significance. These elements stand in sharp contrast to the vast wilderness outside the scenic area, sparking wonder and admiration among domestic and international visitors.
