Muztagh Ata has long been known as the “Father of Ice Mountains,” standing tall and majestic on the Pamir Plateau. It lies over 100 kilometers away, with straight-line distances of 216 and 262 kilometers from Kashgar and Artux, respectively. In 1892, Conway and others from the Royal Geographical Society of Britain came here in grand fashion, and in 1894, the Swede Sven Hedin also led an expedition to the foot of Muztagh Ata. They attempted to climb to the summit of Muztagh Ata six times but were unsuccessful. It was not until recent years that mountaineering teams from both China and abroad successfully reached the summit, including Wang Shi, President of Shenzhen Vanke Group, who summited in July 2001. Due to its resemblance to Japan’s Mount Fuji, Muztagh Ata has also attracted a large number of Japanese tourists. In terms of market competitiveness, Muztagh Ata stands out in the international mountaineering community for its high altitude, accessibility, and convenient transportation. In recent years, mountaineering teams aiming for Mount Everest have used it as a training ground.

Muztagh Ata pierces the clouds and towers over the sky. With its summit perpetually covered in snow, it resembles an old man with timeless white hair—both benevolent and awe-inspiring. Over the years, it has drawn worshippers, and numerous domestic and international mountaineering teams have come in an endless stream. The more mysterious a place is, the more it attracts people. The Karakoram Highway winds around the base of Muztagh Ata, and with the development of multifunctional service facilities at Karakul Lake at the mountain’s foot, more and more mountaineering enthusiasts from home and abroad arrive with just a bicycle, a small tent, and a sleeping bag to set up camp at the foot of Muztagh Ata. In summer and autumn, colorful tents bloom like flowers, adorning the desolate Gobi, snow-capped mountains, and grasslands with exceptional charm. Many come here with the devotion of pilgrims to admire the harmonious scenery of Muztagh Ata and Karakul Lake, or to explore the profound cultural heritage hidden beneath the mountain and lake.

Like a towering, stalwart man of the West, Muztagh Ata stands firmly by the gentle, maiden-like Karakul Lake. Its loftiness and might have “made countless heroes bow in admiration.” For a century, how many explorers have crossed oceans, drawn by its fame, in pursuit of its mysteries and secrets.
