Leaving Aketao County and traveling westward along the China-Pakistan Highway for about 150 kilometers, the landscape suddenly opens up — the steep, rugged mountains abruptly recede, revealing a vast, flat expanse ahead. After passing through the “Tiger’s Mouth,” the road turns right onto a winding, ribbon-like makeshift gravel path. Winding through undulating sand dunes for over 20 kilometers, a vast expanse of water comes into view. Under the blazing summer sun, it shimmers golden, dazzling to the eye. Towering on both sides of the tranquil lake are the majestic Kongur Tagh and Muztagh Ata peaks, standing tall and graceful, piercing the sky with noble poise and extraordinary presence. Gazing down at the expansive waters, one sees ice-capped peaks bathed in the lake, crystal-clear and charmingly delicate. Beneath the surface lies a world of crystal palaces, sparking boundless reverie.

Nestled among snow-capped peaks and icy mountains, Lake Qiake A'igele Kule is even more serene and profound, like a precious jade embedded in the mountain range. This 44-square-kilometer high-mountain lake nestles closely in the embrace of the Kunlun Mountains. The lake appears even more pristine and clear because of the surrounding glaciers, while the mountains gain an even grander and more ethereal presence thanks to the lake. Is it the mountains that benefit from the nourishment of the lake, or the lake that adds richness to the mountains?

By the shimmering lake, the grass is lush and green, as if adorning the water’s edge with a velvet trim. Dense reeds, dark green and solemn, sway gently, singing their ballads of affection for this highland lake. No matter how strong the wind, it cannot break their spirit — slender yet resilient, embodying the unique toughness of the plateau.

At the foot of the glacier and by the lakeside, purple, pinkish-white, and pale yellow flowers bloom brilliantly amid the lush green grass. Yurts are scattered across the land like stars. Black yaks and white sheep move about like constantly shifting chess pieces on this vast chessboard. Occasional gusts of wind carry the silvery laughter of Kyrgyz girls and their lark-like singing from the herds. Their rosy cheeks display the distinctive beauty of plateau maidens, their bright eyes reflecting the shimmer of the lake. Long braids adorned with simple silver ornaments sparkle under the sunlight, attracting flocks of pinkish-white and pale yellow butterflies that chase and play with each other in pairs.

Lake Qiake A'igele Kule is the sea of life on the plateau. Near the lake lies a Kyrgyz herding village. The locals proudly say that in winter, the lake becomes a natural ice-skating rink, and in summer, it serves as a vast swimming pool. Every summer afternoon, as the lake warms up, groups of young people, wearing only shorts, leap into the water like birds, startling flocks of snowy white water birds and brown wild ducks into flight. Silly, big-bellied dogfish bump clumsily against people. A few can be easily caught and either stewed or grilled — their meat is especially tender and delicious.

When young people paddle out to the bird island in the middle of the lake, they can spot nests of pure white swan eggs and colorful bird eggs hidden deep in the reeds. The bird island is truly a free kingdom for birds, where flocks thrive and reproduce. People are welcome to admire them from afar but must not disturb them — a custom and awareness shared by all ethnic groups in the region, fostering harmony between humans and animals as they share the bounty of nature.
