The Song Dynasty Great Wall in Kelan is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Kelan has long been a key transportation route from Taiyuan to Yanmen Pass and on to Inner Mongolia and northern Shaanxi, serving as a protective barrier for the city of Taiyuan. As early as the Northern Qi Dynasty, a section of the Great Wall was built here along with military fortifications, some remnants of which still remain. During the Sui Dynasty, the local area reconstructed parts of the wall along the original Northern Qi foundations. The Song Dynasty Great Wall in Kelan was constructed over a span of more than 700 years through the Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, Sui, and Song dynasties, ultimately taking shape during the Song Dynasty. It has a history of over a thousand years.

The Song Dynasty Great Wall in Kelan stretches from Qingcheng Mountain in Kelan County in the west to Heye Ping Mountain, which connects to Wuzhai County, in the east. The over 20 kilometers of remaining Song Dynasty wall structures within Kelan County are all built from slab stones. Well-preserved sections reach a height of about 4.2 meters and a top width of approximately 2.1 meters. Some segments retain parapets around 30 centimeters high, and certain areas still have remnants of artillery platforms. Local residents have also occasionally discovered small quantities of magnetic shards, tombstones, and ancient weaponry near the wall. The architectural style of the Kelan Song Dynasty Great Wall is unique and holds significant reference value for studying ancient border defense and local social customs in China.

Due to years of wind and rain erosion, prolonged grazing by local sheep herds on the mountains, and inadequate protection of the ancient wall due to funding and technical limitations, the wall has suffered severe damage in recent years: the stone-slab-built sections have developed multiple fractures, with the longest cracks exceeding 3 meters, making parts impassable; many areas have seen the wall top, originally about 1.5 meters wide, reduced to just 20–30 centimeters, with some tops even sloping dangerously; walls around 3 meters high show numerous loose rocks and fissures, posing a constant risk of collapse.

The Song Dynasty Great Wall in Kelan blends seamlessly with the Heye Ping alpine meadow and Kelan Forest Park, creating a tourist destination that harmoniously combines historical culture with natural scenery.
