Xiurong Academy

Xiurong Academy is a cultural relic protection unit of Shanxi Province.

Xiurong Academy is located on a highland at No. 20 Xiurong Lane, Nanjie Village, Xiurong Subdistrict, Xinfu District. Established in the 40th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1774), it faces south with a length of 151.5 meters from east to west and 179 meters from north to south. After its completion, the academy replaced the Confucian school of Xinzhou, becoming the highest educational institution in the region at the time. In the 28th year of the Guangxu reign (1902), it was renamed “Xinxing School,” marking the first instance in Shanxi of an academy being converted into a school. Built along the terrain, Xiurong Academy consists of three sections: upper, middle, and lower courtyards. The upper courtyard serves as the main area, while the middle and lower courtyards function as study quarters. The main courtyard features a three-courtyard layout, with a music tower, a hallway, and the main hall aligned along the central axis, flanked by wing rooms, side rooms, and student quarters. An octagonal pavilion, a square pavilion, and a hexagonal pavilion stand in a line from south to north. The main hall is built on a brick foundation, with a width of five bays, a depth of four rafters, a single-eave hanging gable roof, a five-rafter non-veranda structure, and bracket sets. On June 10, 2004, it was designated as a provincial-level key cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Shanxi Province. Nanjie Village: Lujiazhuang Village is located on West Changzheng Road, bordering Kuang Village to the east, Jiulonggang to the south, Dayun Road to the west, and both the Xinzhou-Jinzhong and Heping roads—two east-west thoroughfares—to the north. The village has 2,827 households and a population of 8,481. It currently has 800 mu of land, mainly planted with corn, yielding 350 tons annually. The local economy primarily revolves around construction, building production, transportation, and service industries.
