Ancient Xinzhou City

Ancient Xinzhou City is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism destination.

Xinzhou, anciently known as Xiurong, is located on the route between Taiyuan and Mount Wutai, and serves as the seat of the Xinzhou Administrative Office and the Prefectural Committee. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Xinzhou was part of the State of Jin; in the Warring States Period, it belonged to the State of Zhao. In the Qin and Han dynasties, it was under the jurisdiction of Taiyuan Commandery, and later under Yanmen, Taiping, and other commanderies. During the Sui Dynasty, it was known as Xinxing Commandery and Yanmen Commandery. In the Tang, Five Dynasties, and Song periods, it was the Dingxiang Commandery of Xinzhou. During the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it was successively known as Xinzhou, Daizhou, and Baozhou. In the early years of the Republic of China, it was part of the Yanmen Circuit. During the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Liberation War, most of the region belonged to the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region, while the western part belonged to the Shanxi-Suiyuan Border Region. In 1949, the Xinzhou Special District was established.
