Qicun Hot Springs in Shanxi, hailed as one of the world’s four most famous hot springs, is located in Qicun Town.

Qicun Town is located in Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, about 20 kilometers from downtown, and is the political, economic, and cultural center of northwestern Xinzhou.

Qicun Town has long been known as the “hometown of hot springs.” The hot spring group is located on the eastern side of Aiquan Mountain, with a thermal field spanning 2.5 square kilometers. There are nine existing hot wells, with depths ranging from 30 to 80 meters, water temperatures between 43°C and 72°C, and a daily water yield of 3,000 m³. The spring water is a high-quality, super composite type rich in radon, hydrogen sulfide, and silicate minerals.

Currently, China’s medical community classifies hot spring water into 12 categories based on their mineral content, therapeutic value, and health benefits. Category 1 includes radon springs containing radioactive elements—Qicun Hot Springs contain 309 Bq/L of radon, which is three times the national standard of 110 Bq/L. Category 3 is for hydrogen sulfide springs—Qicun contains 12.7 mg/L of hydrogen sulfide, 12 times the international standard of 1 mg/L. Category 8 is for silicate springs—Qicun contains 58 mg/L of silicic acid, seven times the national standard of 8 mg/L. Thus, Qicun Hot Springs are a super composite of Types 1, 3, and 8. In terms of water quality, mineral content, and therapeutic value, only four such springs have been found in the world—apart from one in Japan, the other three are in China: Mount Lu in Jiangxi, Huitang in Hunan, and Qicun in Shanxi. Therefore, Qicun Hot Springs are rightfully recognized as one of the world’s four most famous hot springs, and in northern China, it stands alone.

Qicun Hot Springs water is of the calcium sulfate type, a premium super composite containing over ten types of minerals including radon, fluorine, hydrogen sulfide, and silicate. In addition to general benefits such as relieving fatigue, invigorating the spirit, and moisturizing the skin, bathing in these waters triggers a series of biochemical reactions that help regulate the autonomic nervous system and balance the central nervous system, showing especially significant efficacy for diabetes. The combined action of hydrogen sulfide and oxygen can also improve the body’s redox processes, enhance tissue oxidation, promote metal excretion, boost skin blood circulation, reduce inflammation and pain, stimulate the reticuloendothelial system, regulate blood pressure, and increase coronary blood flow to the heart. These effects make it highly effective for treating heart disease, diabetes, rheumatism, and various skin conditions.
