Nanchan Temple is located in Taihuai Town, Wutai County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. The main hall of Nanchan Temple was built in the second year of the Jianzhong era of the Tang Dynasty (780 AD), making it over 1,200 years old. The main hall of Nanchan Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple structure in China and holds a significant place in the history of Chinese architecture.

The reason this precious cultural relic has been so well preserved is closely related to its geographical location. The temple is situated at the southern edge of Mount Wutai, outside the five main peaks, hidden away in a remote mountain valley. It has always been a quiet, less-visited place and was never highly regarded throughout the dynasties. As a result, it escaped destruction during periods of religious persecution and warfare, surviving to this day as the oldest surviving Buddhist temple building in China.

In terms of architectural style, the Mahavira Hall of Nanchan Temple embodies the simple, solid, and ancient characteristics of Tang Dynasty architecture. Among the ancient buildings still standing in China, it has the flattest roof. A pair of tall ridge beasts stand at either end of the roof ridge, making it appear particularly majestic and robust compared to the surrounding auxiliary halls, exuding an air of solemn authority.

Inside the hall, there are 17 statues arranged on a lotus-patterned Buddhist altar that measures 8.4 meters in length and 6.3 meters in width. These statues have well-proportioned bodies and natural postures, representing some of the finest examples of Tang Dynasty sculpture in China, very similar to those found in the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. The expressions of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas are solemn and benevolent, while the guardians are powerful and imposing. They resonate emotionally with visitors and are considered artworks of extremely high value.

In addition, Nanchan Temple also houses many stone carvings, all dating back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, and are rare physical artifacts for the study of China’s religious and art history.

Taihuai Town: The original site of Taihuai Town was located in the central part of Mount Wutai, by the Qingshui River. It got its name because it is surrounded by five peaks, and it is near the famous temple complex of Mount Wutai. During the early Qing Dynasty, Taihuai once served as an imperial retreat, where Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong visited and stayed multiple times.
