The Mao Zedong's Former Residence Memorial Hall on Mount Wutai is a cultural heritage site protected by Shanxi Province and a classic destination on China’s red tourism routes.

The Mao Zedong's Former Residence Memorial Hall is located in the abbot’s courtyard of Tayuan Temple on Mount Wutai. The interior is arranged as it originally was: a military blanket covers the kang, a wooden table stands on the floor with an inkstone placed on it, and a wooden chair sits in front of the table. On a square platform between the table and the edge of the kang is a large box topped with a bronze teapot. In the east wing of the backyard, there are three rooms — the left and right ones were the former residences of Zhou Enlai and Ren Bishi during their stay. In the spring of 1948, Mao Zedong led the Party Central Committee's headquarters as they left Yan'an, passed through northwestern Shanxi, and headed for Xibaipo in Hebei Province. On the evening of April 9th, they arrived at Tayuan Temple in Taihuai Town. The following morning, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, accompanied by local officials, visited the temple’s cultural relics. Mao inspected Tayuan Temple, Shifangtang Temple, and the Mongolian-Tibetan Cooperative Association, chatting warmly with monks along the way, expressing concern for their lives and religious activities, and encouraging local officials to protect cultural relics, faithfully implement the Party’s religious policies, unite patriotic monks, and build Mount Wutai well. Although Mao Zedong only stayed overnight on Mount Wutai, he left behind the cherished memory of “Spring Arriving on Mount Wutai” in the hearts of the local people.

It administers four villager groups: Yanglin, Yingfang, Taiping Street, and Jinjiesi, with a total of over 380 households and more than 840 residents. The village has only 20 acres of arable land but boasts a forested area of 2,648 acres. Due to its geographical advantages, Yanglin Village has consistently prioritized tourism. By focusing on tourism development, the village achieved a total economic income of 5.715 million yuan, including 3.935 million yuan from tourism. The per capita net income is 3,136 yuan.
