Founded in an unknown year, it covers an area of 1,040 square meters. The temple faces south and has two courtyards in a front-to-back layout. Along the central axis within the courtyard, there currently remain a second gate, the Grand Buddha Hall, and east and west side halls. The Grand Buddha Hall is a remnant structure from the Jin Dynasty, while the rest were reconstructed on the original sites by later generations.

The Grand Buddha Hall is three bays wide and six rafters deep, with a slightly square floor plan and a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. The bracket sets are of the inserted-pillar type, with single brackets on the columns. The hall's structure is characterized by a central ridge beam supported by bracket arms. The eaves purlins are well-preserved, and the wooden components below the eaves are intact. The upper beams are supported by large cantilevered brackets, and the carved beams feature delicate designs. The architectural details of the later construction also retain distinctive regional traits of the Song Dynasty.

In front of the temple stands a seven-meter-tall, four-tiered ornamental stone pillar (sūo zhuāng), uniquely shaped and tightly structured, inscribed with the "Śūraṅgama Dhāraṇī Sūtra." At the end of the sutra text is engraved: “Constructed on the 15th day of the 10th month in the year of Yihai, the 2nd year of the Jingyou era (1035).”

Yansheng Temple is located in Shanwen Village, Yangbai Township, in the northwest of Wutai County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. There are no historical documents detailing the temple’s origins, and its original scale is unknown. The temple was built during the Jin Dynasty, but the exact founding date is unclear. According to inscriptions within the temple, it was renovated in the 2nd year of the Jingyou era of the Song Dynasty (1035), and subsequent repairs were carried out in various dynasties.

The temple faces south and has a one-courtyard, two-section layout, covering an area of over a thousand square meters. Currently preserved are the mountain gate, main hall, rear courtyard, and newly built east and west side rooms.

The main hall of Yansheng Temple is three bays wide, approximately 13 meters long, with a floor plan that is nearly square. It features a wooden structure with six rafters and a hip-and-gable roof. Architecturally, elements such as the raking struts, intercolumnar brackets, diagonal arches, and camel humps resemble those found in the Manjusri Hall of Foguang Temple in the same region. The long two-rafter cantilever beams and the raking struts shaped like downward-facing ang also bear similarities to those in the Amitabha Hall and Guanyin Hall of Chongfu Temple in Sui County. Based on these features, it is inferred that the hall may have been built during the Jin Dynasty. During the late Jin and early Ming periods, there was a trend toward structural simplification, often achieved by reducing the number of pillars. Though the main hall lacks interior pillars and could not be further simplified, it ingeniously saved one of the four rafters, representing an innovative method of timber construction.

The ornamental stone pillar in front of the temple is seven meters tall, divided into four tiers, with a unique shape and tight structure. It is inscribed with the Śūraṅgama Dhāraṇī Sūtra, and at the end of the sutra text is engraved: “Constructed on the 15th day of the 10th month in the year of Yihai, the 2nd year of the Jing (year unspecified)…” (partially illegible).

In May 2006, Yansheng Temple, as an ancient building from the Jin to Qing periods, was approved by the State Council to be included in the Sixth Batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
