The Xu Family Courtyard in Dajian'an

The Xu Family Courtyard in Dajian'an is located at No. 22, Houchaoyao Street, Dajian'an Village, Jian'an Township, Wutai County. It is a surviving structure from the Republican era. Facing south and set against the north, the property features a traditional quadrangle courtyard layout, covering an area of 372 square meters. The main house has five rooms with flush gable roofs and gray-tiled roofing, fronted by a three-room porch with a rolled shed roof, a hanging gable style, and gray tiles. The east, west, and south wings each have three rooms with flush gable roofs and gray tiles. The main gate also has a flush gable design with gray tiles; above the door lintel is a carved decorative panel featuring a round window; the lintel is flanked by carved beams. Inside, there is a horizontal plaque inscribed with “Dwelling of Virtue” and on the side walls is calligraphy reading “The noble dwelling of the Xu family, 1923,” inscribed by Chang Zanchun. The architecture is neat and the layout is complete. In earlier years, it was inhabited by the parents of Xu Zhuqing, the wife of Yan Xishan.
