Seven Buddha Temple on Mount Wutai

The Seven Buddha Temple on Mount Wutai is a cultural heritage site protected by Wutai County.

The Seven Buddha Temple on Mount Wutai is located about 250 meters east of Dongzhuang Village in Taihuai Town, Wutai County. It faces west and measures 80.71 meters from east to west and 179.12 meters from north to south, covering an area of 14,500 square meters. Its exact founding date is unknown.

According to the Qing Dynasty’s *Wutai County Annals*, it was rebuilt in the 28th year of the Daoguang reign (1848). The existing Seven Buddha Hall is a structure from the Qing Dynasty. The temple follows a single-courtyard layout, with the central axis featuring, in sequence, the Hall of the Three Saints of Huayan and the Seven Buddha Hall. On both sides are side halls and auxiliary halls. In recent years, additional structures have been built north of the main courtyard, including the Skanda Hall, Manjushri Hall, Mahavira Hall, bell and drum towers, and monks' quarters, while a Seven Buddha Pagoda and a separate courtyard have been constructed south of the main courtyard. The Seven Buddha Hall sits on a stone foundation that is 12.1 meters wide, 12.5 meters deep, and 0.94 meters high. The hall is three bays wide and six rafters deep, with a single-eave gable-and-hip roof. It features a seven-rafter front-and-rear corridor-style framework, with four-panel lattice doors on the front eaves of the central bay, and four-panel lattice windows in the side bays. Inside the hall, seven newly created Buddha statues are arranged in a row on the Buddhist altar. The temple also houses three Song Dynasty dhāraṇī pillars, a bell cast in the 4th year of the Chenghua reign of the Ming Dynasty (1468), a commemorative stele from the 28th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1848), and two Mongolian-language steles.
