Site of Wutai City

The Site of Wutai City is located in the middle section of Wenchang Road, Taicheng Village, Taicheng Town, Wutai County. According to the county annals, it was first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The old city had a perimeter of three li and twenty steps, with walls utilizing natural cliffs in the northeast, southwest, and north, while the west side was fortified with walls and equipped with three city gates: south, north, and west.

In the third year of the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1570), Magistrate Zhang Shaofang started building the south and north gate towers and constructed barbicans outside. In the 24th year of the Wanli era (1596), the city walls were expanded, reaching a height of 3.2 zhang and a thickness of 2.5 zhang. There were 635 crenels and 25 battlement platforms, along with three gates. In the 33rd year of the Wanli era (1605), Magistrate Li Yangcai added four more towers. In the 31st year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1766), Magistrate Wang Jiazheng repaired all four sides of the city walls, constructing three-tiered stone platform corners stretching 600 zhang in length. The surviving sections include the southern wall, with a remaining height of 2 meters and a length of 116 meters; the northern wall, with a remaining height of 2–3 meters and a length of 305 meters, covering a total area of 97,295 square meters. The eastern wall had three-tiered stone platforms built in the 31st year of the Qianlong era, with the first tier now standing 9 meters high, the second 3 meters, and the third 8 meters, all constructed using pebbles. Taicheng Village: Located in the central-southern part of Wutai County, less than one kilometer from Taicheng Town and the county government, Taicheng Village is the central village of Wutai County. The village has a population of over 1,000 people, with over 520 mu of arable land planted with grain, vegetables, and cash crops. Various enterprises and institutions are planned within the village. The main sources of income for villagers are rental income from houses, labor work, and animal husbandry. Livestock farming generates about 700,000 yuan, with total income exceeding 7 million yuan. Taicheng Village enjoys convenient transportation, a prominent geographical advantage, and abundant labor resources.
