The “Sanjian Mountain Eco-Tourism Natural Scenic Area” is located in Ximaiheyi Village, Beixiazhuang Township, approximately 26 kilometers northeast of Yu County, Shanxi Province. In front of the village flows the Yinhe River, the source of the Wen River, while to the rear lies the majestic Sanjian Mountain, the main peak of the historically significant Baima Mountain in Shanxi. The mountain rises abruptly on three sides, with eastern and western peaks standing opposite each other and the northern peak steep and sheer like a screen—hence the name “Sanjian Mountain.” Composed of Foyeding (Eastern Peak), Pusading (Western Peak), and Yuhuangding (Northern Peak), Sanjian Mountain stands at an elevation of 1,743 meters, covering an area of 8 square kilometers, and ranks as the fourth highest peak in Yangquan City. From the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period to the Republican era, it served as a crucial transportation and communication hub connecting Shanxi and Hebei provinces. The area features notable scenic spots such as the White Dragon Temple, Qilang Temple, Bai Shui Cave, and remnants of the ancient Great Wall.

Though remote, this place boasts high-altitude fresh air, dense forests, lush greenery, and shady canopies, forming a well-preserved mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest within Yu County. With a forest coverage rate exceeding 60%, it serves as a rare natural oxygen bar. The main tree species include Chinese pine and oak, with 82 varieties such as pine, cypress, poplar, willow, elm, and birch spread across over 1,000 acres of woodland. There are also 138 types of natural shrubs such as smoke tree, thorny rose, and sea buckthorn, 68 varieties of miscellaneous trees, and 18 types of vines spanning more than 2,000 acres. The wildlife includes 34 species such as leopard, local panther, wolf, fox, roe deer, goat, wild boar, hare, and wildcat. Birds total 67 species, including sparrowhawk, falcon, lark, heron, sparrow, magpie, pheasant, crow, and owl. The area also hosts 125 medicinal plants, such as Solomon’s seal, polygonatum, rehmannia, asarum, rhubarb, platycodon, bupleurum, galangal, plantain seed, and codonopsis. It forms a harmonious habitat where trees, shrubs, grasses, animals, and plants coexist without pollution—a true paradise for flora and fauna. After rain, when mist veils the mountains, the scene becomes dreamlike and intoxicating, as if one has stepped into a fairyland. Historically, it was known as the “Sacred Realm of Sanjian.”

The Sanjian Mountain scenic area offers picturesque views all year round: Spring transforms it into a world of blooming flowers, with various blossoms competing in vibrant colors, their fragrance lingering amid pale yellow and dark green hues. Lush peach blossoms blanket the mountains, looking like snow or frost, creating a refreshing and idyllic atmosphere reminiscent of a hidden paradise. Summer changes the landscape from a world of birdsong and colorful blooms into a sea of green, filling the mountain with vitality. The dense foliage provides perfect shade and a cool retreat, like wandering into a giant bonsai. By golden autumn in October, the harvest season arrives, with a variety of medicinal herbs and wild fruits ripening, tempting in both color and taste. The once uniformly green mountains now blend crimson and emerald hues, offering a unique spectacle. Most breathtaking are the smoke trees, their leaves turned fiery red by frost, bold and intense, as the forests become a riot of crimson. Layer upon layer of crimson foliage contrasts strikingly with the resilient pines, creating a scene both elegant and surreal—like being in “Beijing’s Fragrant Hills” or stepping into an autumn fairy tale. Under the warm autumn sun, the red leaves appear as gracefully adorned maidens exuding tenderness, each standing out uniquely, forming a stunning visual delight that refreshes the soul. In the harsh winter, when all is desolate and the north wind howls, a heavy snowfall transforms the area into a vast snowy expanse. The dark mountains resemble rolling seas, the plains like galloping wax figures, and the peaks glisten like exquisite jade under the sunlight, with evergreen trees sparkling brilliantly. This tranquil place, far from the hustle and bustle, serves as an ideal eco-friendly and leisure destination for returning to nature.

In recent years, with strong support from all sectors, the Party Committee and government of Beixiazhuang Township in Yu County have developed the Sanjian Mountain Eco-Tourism Natural Scenic Area into a promising destination. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the township will further increase investment to build a “tourism and culture hub,” integrating its unique natural and cultural attractions—including Sanjian Mountain, Wanhuadong Cave, Rulai Mountain, Shibapan, and Taishan Temple—into a cohesive experience. These sites, aligned with the heritage of the Cangshan Scenic Area and Xibaipo Scenic Area, will become another top-tier destination in Yangquan, Shanxi Province, and even nationwide for tourism, sightseeing, and exploration.
