Shilou Mountain Scenic Area
Introduction:
Shilou Mountain Scenic Area is located 13–25 kilometers east of Xing County, covering an area of approximately 30 square kilometers. It includes Shilou Mountain, Shihou Mountain, and Immortal Cave scenic zones. The area features overlapping peaks, lush forests, well-preserved vegetation, and picturesque scenery. Shilou Mountain gets its name from its resemblance to a three-tiered stone pagoda. At an elevation of 1,770 meters, it stands tall amidst surrounding mountains, rising prominently above the peaks and resembling a mysterious tower emerging from the heavens when viewed from afar. Across the river from Shilou Mountain lies Shihou Mountain, which stands over 1,600 meters high and is named for the several massive rocks on its summit that strikingly resemble monkeys. On the mountainside, there are ruins of a Taoist temple that was renovated during the Yuan Dynasty’s Dade era. At the foot of the southern side of the main peak lies a natural cave called Heilong Pool (Black Dragon Pool), which contains two springs—one known as the Sacred Spring and the other as the Human Spring—both of which never dry up or overflow. Additionally, the main peak’s rocks resemble a lotus flower, earning it the name “Lotus Peak Stone Beacon,” one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Xing County. The Immortal Cave is located in Xiandongkou Village, Jiaoloushen Township, about 13 kilometers east of Xing County. Inside the cave, there is a complex network of interconnected chambers, passages, and tunnels that go in all directions, creating a winding, mysterious path often described as the “best in North China.” The karst formations inside the cave are highly developed, with abundant stalactites and stalagmites decorating the cave walls and ceilings. Many formations take the shapes of “hanging waterfalls,” “birds and beasts,” and “longevity deities,” each uniquely beautiful. Notable sights within the cave include the “Sacred Lotus Pond” and the “Immortals’ Gathering.” The presence of over a hundred nun “self-mummification pits” scattered throughout the cave (which require further verification), as well as discovered Han Dynasty pottery shards and ceramics from the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, add an air of mystery to the site.
