Xing County Jin-Sui Liberated Area Martyrs' Cemetery

The Xing County Jin-Sui Liberated Area Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Jin-Sui Liberated Area Martyrs' Cemetery is located on the northern side of Xing County in Lüliang City, Shanxi Province. It was completed in 1953 and covers an area of over 8,000 square meters. In 1989, it was designated by the State Council as a “National Key Martyrs’ Memorial Building Protection Unit,” in 1995, the Lüliang Regional Party Committee and Administrative Office named it the “Lüliang Region Patriotic Education Base,” and in 2005, the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and Shanxi Provincial People’s Government named it the “Shanxi Province Patriotic Education Demonstration Base.” The cemetery is built against Yujing Mountain. The lower courtyard features an antique-style gate, a memorial hall, and various protection plaques; the middle courtyard garden has a Dragon Spring Bridge; and at the center of the upper courtyard stands the Jin-Sui Liberated Area Martyrs’ Memorial Tower. The tower is surrounded by inscriptions from Comrades Mao Zedong, He Long, Lin Feng, Li Jingquan, and Wu Xinyu. On both sides of the memorial tower are hexagonal pavilions, and behind the tower is a row of five cave dwellings that serve as the Jin-Sui Martyrs’ Memorial Room. Above the caves, there are two floors of exhibition rooms displaying the heroic deeds of Jin-Sui martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Liberation War, as well as a list of 166 Jin-Sui martyrs at the county or regiment level and above. There are over 100 stone steps connecting the foot of the mountain to the top of Yujing Mountain. At the summit, there is a mountain gate, a memorial pavilion, and at the center stands a white marble memorial stele inscribed with the words “Inherit the Martyrs’ Will, Promote the Heroic Spirit,” written by [Name] during his inspection of Xing County in 1994. Behind it is the “April 8th” Martyrs and Jin-Sui Notables Exhibition Hall, which displays portraits, life stories, and some personal belongings and aircraft wreckage of martyrs such as Wang Ruofei, Qin Bangxian, Ye Ting, and Deng Fa, who died in the Black Tea Mountain incident in Xing County on April 8, 1946. It also exhibits portraits and life stories of Guan Xiangying, political commissar of the Jin-Sui Military Region, and Fan Ting, director of the Jin-Sui Administrative Office, as well as photos of over 300 notable figures from the Jin-Sui region—including He Long, Lin Feng, and Li Jingquan—who fought, worked, and made significant contributions in the Jin-Sui Revolutionary Base Area. In 2011, the Jin-Sui Martyrs’ Cemetery acquired 120 acres of land in Zhaisang Village, Donghui Township, to establish a martyrs’ burial area. The remains of 410 martyrs from 21 scattered burial sites across the county were relocated and reinterred here. The site includes 328 single graves and 4 shared graves, along with supporting facilities such as six work rooms, a stone memorial archway, and a memorial tower. This addition filled the gap of not having a dedicated burial area in the Jin-Sui Martyrs’ Cemetery.
