Xiangyangxia Scenic Area

Xiangyangxia, also known as Thirty Li Peach Blossom Cave, is located 30 kilometers west of Xinghua Village. The scenic area stretches 15 kilometers from the mouth of Xiangyangxia Valley in the east to the foot of Huanglu Ridge at the border with Lishi City in the west.

Xiangyangxia is a long, narrow valley flanked by steep cliffs and towering rocks, with an ancient post road running through its center. Because of its enclosed, box-like terrain, it was historically called “Xiangyang Xia (Toward the Sun Box)”. In early March each year, wild peach blossoms bloom competitively on the rock faces, glowing crimson like rosy clouds. Viewed from a distance, the clusters of peach blossoms on both cliffs create an illusion of overlapping in midair, making it feel as if one were walking through a tunnel—hence the name “Thirty Li Peach Blossom Cave”.

At the valley’s mouth lies the source of the Xiangyang River, historically called “Jinsuo Pass Water”. The spring, at an elevation of 1,150.88 meters, flows southeast through the canyon, passing the ancient town of Xiangyang, Songjiazhuang, and Potou Village, before joining the Yumen River at Baocheng Temple Village in Yudaohe Town. The total length is 25 kilometers, with a drainage area of 29.4 square kilometers. This spring water has been channeled into the Xiangyang Canal, supplying domestic water and irrigation for over ten downstream villages including Potou, Songjiazhuang, and Upper and Lower Zhangjiazhuang. At the head of the canal there is a village-run rainbow trout farm. In the mid-1970s, educated youths from Xiangyang Village used the spring water to build the first hydropower station in Fenyang, which at the time provided electricity for lighting and grain processing for the whole village. Today, the powerhouse and the reservoir in front of the dam remain well-preserved, though the machinery has been damaged.

Xiangyangxia Grand Canyon was the only ancient post road connecting ancient Fenzhou in ancient times and has been a vital military stronghold fiercely contested since the Han and Jin dynasties. It now features the over 1,400-year-old Northern Qi Great Wall and Jinsuo Pass, which was listed among “China’s Hundred Great Wall Passes” in 1997. There are also three scenic spots: “Little Buddha Bay”, “Big Buddha Bay”, and “Huanglu Ridge”.
