Its predecessors were Shanxi Public He Fen Middle School, established in 1913, and Mingyi Middle School, founded in 1915 by the North China Christian Council. In the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the school became a forefront of the new democratic revolution, producing a large number of revolutionary activists. From its founding until 1947, Fenyang Middle School graduated over 3,000 students, who were spread across various parts of Shanxi and made outstanding contributions to the civilization, progress, and development of the province.

The campus was established in 1915 and has undergone several expansions since then. The school site faces east and is situated to the west, with an overall layout that is irregular in shape from south to north, covering an area of 2,400 square meters. To this day, nine well-preserved buildings from the Republican era remain, featuring simple structures and diverse styles. These buildings are typical examples from the transitional period between traditional and modern Chinese architecture.
