The Mengzi Ten-Thousand-Mu Pomegranate Garden is situated along the Kunhe Economic Belt and boasts a pomegranate-growing history of over 700 years. Thanks to the reform and opening-up policy and the growth of tourism as a key industry, it has gained substantial backing and development assistance from the provincial and prefectural governments. Under a policy that combines government guidance and support with farmer investment and operation—featuring unified planning, contiguous planting, reliance on technology, and market orientation—the garden has flourished. After two decades of development, it now spans 65,000 mu, ranking first in planting area nationwide. Its yield reaches over 60,000 tons, accounting for one-third of the country’s total pomegranate production, with an output value of nearly 200 million yuan. This has significantly contributed to the comprehensive development of the county’s agriculture, rural economy, and society, attracting experts, scholars, investors, and tourists from both home and abroad.

By the year 2000, the garden had cumulatively received nearly 500,000 domestic and international visitors, generating total tourism revenue of 16.5 million yuan. In 1996, the Mengzi Ten-Thousand-Mu Pomegranate Garden was listed by the Yunnan Provincial Government as the province’s first agricultural eco-tourism project. In 1998, the feasibility study report for the garden’s short-term tourism infrastructure projects and the detailed construction plan for the Pomegranate Garden were reviewed and approved by expert panels, and have since been gradually implemented. In 1999, at the Kunming International Horticultural Exposition, Mengzi sweet pomegranates won one of 82 top awards.

The sweet pomegranates of Xin’an Suo in Mengzi are said to have been introduced from Iran and Afghanistan, and have been cultivated for over 700 years. Xin’an Suo Town is located in the central part of Mengzi County, 7.5 kilometers from the county seat. The Xin’an Suo sweet pomegranate is a unique and renowned local specialty, known for its large size, thick flesh, small seeds, juicy texture, and sweet taste. Its seeds are crystal-clear like agate and highly nutritious.
