Nestled on the beautiful banks of the Lancang River on the western Yunnan Plateau lies a radiant green jewel. Located at the junction of Dali, Lincang, and Baoshan prefectures, Changning borders seven counties and districts: Fengqing, Yongde, Shidian, Longyang, Yongping, Yangbi, and Weishan. It covers a total area of 3,888 square kilometers, with mountainous regions accounting for 97.1% of the land. The county has a total population of 343,000, 91% of whom are engaged in agriculture, making it a typical mountainous agricultural county. It administers 5 towns, 8 townships, 125 village (residential) committees, and 1,981 village (residential) groups. In recent years, under the correct leadership of the Baoshan Municipal Party Committee and the Baoshan Municipal People's Government, Changning County has adhered to the guidance of the Theory of - and the important thought of “-”, earnestly implemented the Scientific Outlook on Development, deepened reforms, expanded openness, leveraged its advantages, and accelerated development. “Hometown of mist in the land of colorful clouds, where egrets line up by green hills and clear waters; Xu Xiake and Yang Shen were so enchanted they forgot to leave, while a radiant pearl reflects on the Lancang River.” When you step into Changning County Town, you’ll find that such beautiful verses could only describe Changning.

Although Changning was established as a county relatively late, it boasts a long history. Artifacts unearthed within the county prove that humans have lived and thrived here as early as 3,500–4,000 years ago, creating a splendid culture. Centuries of human activity have given this small town a rich historical background, even though it only became a county seat in 1933. “The town is not large but sits quite high, also a stronghold of the frontier,” the great traveler Xu Xiake once wrote of Changning. An important branch of the ancient Tea Horse Road split into three paths in Changning before converging again into the main route. Thanks to its unique geographical location, Changning became the essential gateway “where stones were carved into steps and clouds pierced into roads.” No matter when you visit, Changning leaves the impression, much like its name suggests — prosperous and peaceful.
