Weiyuan River Nature ReserveThe reserve is located in the southwestern part of Jinggu County in southern Yunnan Province, situated along the lower reaches of the Weiyuan River, a tributary of the Lancang River.

A 41-kilometer drive along Zhongbi Road takes you through the fertile Zhongshan Basin and into the 40-kilometer-long green canyon — the Weiyuan Natural Section of the Reserve. The Weiyuan River runs through the reserve, with lush forests lining both banks. Along the riverbanks lies a vast expanse of dense tropical rainforest, the middle zone is covered with mixed broadleaf forests, and the mountainous areas are dominated by Pu’er coniferous forests. Towering trees dozens of meters high densely cover every hill in the reserve. The river is only a few hundred meters wide, so people standing on opposite banks can easily converse — even if there’s no reply, the mountains will echo your voice.

The Weiyuan River flows through the towering mountains of the Wuliang Mountain range. With emerald hills and clear waters complementing each other, the landscape appears harmonious and mutually enhancing. At times, the current moves gently, as if not wanting to disturb the tranquility of the forest; at other times, it quickens, as if singing along with the pine waves, offering a rhythmic beauty of majestic mountains and elegant waters.

Built in 1996 with an investment of 380,000 yuan, the scenic area management office is nestled between verdant mountains and crystal-clear waters. Visitors can take a rest here before heading to the Tiger Mountain Lookout in the heart of the reserve. Climbing this lookout tower, which stands at an altitude of 1,340 meters and resembles an ancient watchtower used for spotting enemies, offers breathtaking panoramic views that instantly refresh the mind and broaden the horizons. To the east and south, continuous mountain peaks stretch as far as the eye can see, while the Weiyuan River winds around the ranges like a silver ribbon — only the rippling water hints that it is a river flowing toward the distance. In the distance, the mountain mist is hazy, blending the peaks with the sky. Wisps of white clouds drift across the mountainsides, like a gentle fairy descending on a cloud or the silver beard of a kind-hearted mountain guardian swaying in the breeze.

The bushes are filled with spiders’ “eight-trigram webs”; dragonflies, resembling small helicopters, hover motionless above the lawns; butterflies flutter up and down; thousands of bees buzz like tiny engines; cicadas on the trees shriek sharply; and lines of black ants march on the ground... If you stay in these mountains for a while, you might spot monkeys climbing trees, pangolins in burrows, squirrels in the branches, beautiful peacocks, as well as passing elephants, galloping wild boars, and hear the roars of rare animals such as leopards, deer, wolves, and monkeys.

Within the Weiyuan River Nature Reserve, you can also admire the world’s largest and most well-preserved wild population of Dracaena trees. According to experts, the Dracaena here is the Cambodian sword-leaf Dracaena, a precious medicinal plant known for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, stopping bleeding, and enriching blood.

Here, the mountains remain evergreen all year round, shaded by dense foliage, teeming with life; the waters are crystal clear and flow ceaselessly; insects crawl, fish leap, and birds fly; rare birds and animals roam and play together.

The scenery here is truly unique. When you immerse yourself in this beautiful ecological environment, you’ll feel as if you’re floating in a dream: birds sing for you, flowers bloom their fragrance for you, towering ancient trees lift you into the clouds, allowing you to ride the white clouds and cruise along the Weiyuan River, with all the stunning views spread out before your eyes.
