Wude Town is located in the southeastern part of Shiqian County, 35 kilometers from the county seat. It lies along the ancient post road connecting the ancient Sizhou, Shiqian Prefecture, as well as the Wujiang and Yuanjiang river systems. It was not only the administrative center where the “Five-Prefecture Office” was established by the ancient Shiqian Prefecture, Zhenyuan Prefecture, Sinan Prefecture, Tongren Prefecture, and Songtao Prefecture, but also a historically renowned ancient tea-producing region of Shiqian, the birthplace of moss tea. Moreover, it is today’s Taoyuan paradise and fruit kingdom of Shiqian, as well as an exceptional destination for people to explore the Way of Tea, uncover the secrets of longevity, and reflect on the meaning of life.

Wude Town has long been famous for producing high-quality tea. The tea leaves produced here are thick-fleshed, with lasting chestnut aroma, bright liquor color, and a mellow, refreshing taste. It was once one of the main production areas of tribute tea in Shiqian during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1958, Wude tea was invited to the National Model Workers Conference, where it received high praise from leaders including Zhou Enlai. Premier Zhou Enlai even inscribed the banner “Tea Production Has Boundless Prospects” to encourage the vigorous development of the tea industry in Wude. Since the 1950s and 1960s, the tea industry in Wude Town began to develop in a concentrated and contiguous manner. To date, the tea planting area has reached over 20,000 mu, with an annual output of nearly 60 tons of finished tea. A 20-kilometer-long tea industry belt and a 10,000-mu contiguous eco-moss tea demonstration garden have been established. Since the last century, the teas produced here have won numerous awards such as “Special Prize” and “Gold Award” at domestic and international tea expos and food expos. The products are sold across the country and overseas. In 2011, it was successively awarded the titles of “Guizhou’s Most Beautiful Tea Township” and “Birthplace of Moss Tea.” Today, the scene of “tea in the mountains, scenery within the tea, and prosperity among tea farmers” has become a true reflection of Wude Town.

Shiqian has long been known as the “Everlasting Taoyuan” (with ancient cliff inscriptions of “Everlasting Taoyuan” along the Wujiang riverside in Shiqian County). Wude Town is renowned for growing peaches, producing peaches, and their delicious taste. Since 2004, guided by the ecological development philosophy of “building both golden and green mountains,” the town has encouraged land transfers and developed premium fruit industries—mainly honey peaches—on barren hills, slopes, and secondary forests in areas such as Guangpingcao, Jigongling, and Jianpo. To date, over 18,000 mu of premium fruit orchards have been developed, including one contiguous 10,000-mu peach orchard, with an annual fruit yield of more than 8,750 tons. During harvest season, fruit farmers enjoy bountiful profits. In 2014, the fruit-growing zone in the town was listed as a provincial modern high-efficiency agricultural demonstration park. With the completion of the 10,000-mu peach orchard in Wude Town, a truly magnificent and spectacular scene unfolds: “seas of flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, and abundant fruit in autumn.” Shiqian’s “Everlasting Taoyuan” presents a new look, while “Taoyuan Wude” plays a new tune of the times.

The town center of Wude Town is named “Xiao Jigong” (Little Rooster Peak). There is a mountain called “Jigongling” (Rooster Peak) in the area, and historically, the “Five-Prefecture Office” was established here to manage interlocking territories (areas overlapping between Shiqian Prefecture, Zhenyuan Prefecture, Sinan Prefecture, Tongren Prefecture, and Songtao Prefecture). The rooster symbolizes five virtues: “literary,” “martial,” “brave,” “benevolent,” and “trustworthy.” The “Five Prefectures” correspond to the “Five Virtues,” hence the alternative name “Wude” (Five Virtues). As a result, these five virtues have become a cherished legacy passed down through generations. They are: “Literary Virtue”—gentle and refined, dealing harmoniously with the world; “Martial Virtue”—noble and upright, neither arrogant nor servile; “Brave Virtue”—daring and resolute, unafraid of difficulties; “Benevolent Virtue”—kind-hearted and courteous; “Trustworthy Virtue”—keeping promises and valuing integrity. For thousands of years, the people of Wude and even all of Shiqian have interpreted the highest realm of life in the “Land of Yelang · Longevity Shiqian” through these five virtues.

As “tea” is known as the “medicine for all ailments” and the “divine wood” for longevity, and “peaches” are hailed as the “fruit of good fortune” and the “fruit of longevity,” while the people of Wude have adhered to the five virtues of “literary,” “martial,” “brave,” “benevolent,” and “trustworthy” through generations. In recent years, as Wude Town has integrated the construction of tea and fruit industrial parks with tourism development, alongside the continuous growth of its tea and fruit industries, “Tea-Town Ancient Town · Taoyuan Wude” has increasingly become a new landmark of Shiqian. Here, while showcasing an “economic highland,” it also reveals the “spiritual highland” of this land. Amidst the natural beauty and idyllic charm of its landscapes and parks, visitors may gain insights that could influence their lives—or even those of future generations.
