Guiyang Forest Park

Guiyang Forest Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Guiyang Forest Park was originally an experimental forest farm of the Guizhou Provincial Academy of Forestry Sciences. In April 1960, during his inspection tour in Guizhou, the then Premier visited and, impressed by the lush forests, diverse tree species, and magnificent scenery, proposed converting the forest farm into a forest park to allow visitors to enjoy its beauty and enrich their cultural and spiritual life. Owing to its abundant tree varieties, mature forests, vast area, bubbling springs, presence of rare birds, chirping cicadas, birdsongs, and fragrant grasses, it has been honored as one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Guiyang” and ranks first among urban forest parks nationwide. In 1999, it was listed as one of the “Famous Gardens of China.”

Located at Tuyun Pass in the urban area of Guiyang, the park is just 2.5 kilometers from downtown. With rolling hills, fertile land, and stretching over dozens of kilometers, the park covers a total area of 3,900 acres, 90% of which is forested. It includes over ten forested areas such as those with catalpa, camphor, pomelo, oak, sandalwood, pine, fir, poplar, and oil tea, boasting rich resources. There are nationally protected first-class dove trees, as well as thousands of precious tree species such as pine, fir, camphor, pomelo, oak, sandalwood, and apricot. It also cultivates famous and rare flowers and plants like camellia, osmanthus, and azalea. Wild animals such as thrushes, owls, pheasants, squirrels, pangolins, hedgehogs, deer, rabbits, weasels, and mud pigs live here. The park also preserves many cliff inscriptions and stone tablets. Nearby were originally the Guan Yu Temple, the Official Reception Hall, and the Ji’en and Keqi Pavilions. Along the way stand more than 20 stone archways, the most notable being the “Ten Thousand Li Sealed Marquis” archway commemorating Yang Fang. Generally speaking, essential items for forest travel include a compass, machete, - , fishing gear, waterproof matches, raincoat, long-sleeved shirts and pants, rope, red medicine, and snakebite medicine. Additionally, you should acquire some basic knowledge about forest travel.

Getting Lost

If you get lost, don’t panic. First, estimate how far you’ve gone from a place where you could confirm your direction, then scrape some bark off a nearby tree as a marker. Scrape off more bark from around the trunk so that it can be seen from any direction. This will help you eventually find your way back. If you come across a stream or river while lost, follow it — it may lead you out of the forest.

Preventing Illness

On long trips, it’s impossible to carry large amounts of water and food, so you may need to find water sources along the way. Although forest streams may look crystal clear, they often contain deadly pathogens, so you must boil the water before drinking. Fortunately, there are many moisture-providing plants in the forest. Before traveling, you should learn to identify edible plants. If you haven’t had the chance, observe what wild fruits birds and monkeys eat — these are generally safe for humans.

Preventing Snakebites

To avoid venomous snake bites, make noise while walking to scare snakes away: use a stick to tap through bushes. If you’re bitten by a venomous snake, stay calm. First, tie a rope or cloth tightly above the wound (closer to the heart), then squeeze the surrounding skin to force out the toxic blood. Rinse the wound with clean water or saliva, take snakebite antidote tablets, and apply them to the wound. For serious injuries, seek medical attention as soon as possible after administering initial aid.

Avoiding Lightning Strikes

If you encounter a thunderstorm in the forest, head for dense shrubbery nearby — do not take shelter under tall trees. Tall trees often attract lightning strikes. When taking cover from rain, temporarily store metal objects such as machetes in a place where you can easily find them — don’t carry them on your person.

Additionally, forests are full of pests like mosquitoes, ticks, and leeches, so avoid wearing shorts and short sleeves for the sake of coolness. Instead, tuck your pants into your socks and fasten your cuffs. When night falls, it’s best to sleep in a tent or mosquito net to prevent insect bites and exposure to damp, cold forest conditions that may trigger arthritis and other illnesses.
