Wujiang River Gallery

The Wujiang River originates from Xianglushan Mountain in the southeast of Weining Autonomous County, Guizhou Province. It flows through Fuling, Chongqing, and joins the Yangtze River. As a major tributary of the Yangtze, it stretches 1,037 kilometers in total, with 874 kilometers within Guizhou. Historically known as the “Yanjiang,” “Qianjiang,” or “Fuling River.” In 2003, the National Tourism Administration designated the Wujiang River as the “Wujiang River Gallery.” The section of the Wujiang River that flows through Huangsha Village, Huajue Township, within Jinsha County is called the Huangsha River; the stretch above, where it borders Liuguang in Liuyang, Xiuwen, Taizai Township in Qianxi, and Xiaba in Huajue, Jinsha, is known as the Liuguang River; the Huangsha River becomes the “Wujiang River” once it enters the territory of Houshan Township.

The main course of the Wujiang River that flows through Jinsha County is 45 kilometers long. In November 1979, the Wujing Dam was completed and began impounding water, submerging riverside areas across five counties including Zunyi, Xifeng, Xiuwen, Qianxi, and Jinsha. Among them, the submerged area in Jinsha accounts for 49% of the total reservoir area, affecting the Huangsha River, Pianyan River, and their tributaries, with a total backwater stretch of 156 kilometers. Within the thousand-li “Wujiang River Gallery” spanning over ten counties and cities in two provinces, Jinsha County holds more than one-tenth of the “scenery.”

The primary source markets are Guiyang City and Zunyi City, with a combined permanent population of 3 million.
