Jin State Museum

The Jin State Museum is located in Qucun Town, Quwo County. It is the first thematic site museum in the province, built around the nationally key cultural relics protection unit “Qucun–Tianma Site.” The “Qucun–Tianma Site” is vast in scale, extending east to Tianma Village in Yicheng County, west to Qucun Town in Quwo County, south to the banks of the Fu River, and north to Qiaoshan Slope. The site stretches 3,800 meters from east to west and 2,800 meters from north to south, covering an area of nearly 11 square kilometers. Through nearly twenty years of continuous large-scale exploration and excavation by Peking University and the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology—spanning twelve excavations—the site has uncovered an area of 12,000 square meters, revealing more than 1,000 tombs, including 800 from the Zhou Dynasty. In the core area of the site, nine groups of nineteen tombs belonging to early rulers of the Jin State and their consorts were discovered, along with ten chariot pits. Over 12,000 pieces of precious cultural relics were excavated. This discovery was listed among China’s Top Ten Archaeological Finds in 1992 and 1993, and its findings supported research on the chronology of Western Zhou kings for China’s Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project.

The Jin State Museum covers a total area of 124,000 square meters, with a building area of 13,393 square meters, a green space area of 26,993 square meters, and a total investment of approximately 198 million yuan. The museum complex mainly includes a historical culture exhibition hall, an excavation history exhibition hall, a site preservation and display hall, a multimedia hall, a collection storage facility, and other auxiliary facilities. The architectural design firm was Shanghai Tongjian Qianghua Design Co., Ltd., with Taiyuan Architectural Design and Research Institute as the collaborative partner, and Jin Shengyu as the chief designer.

The Historical Culture Exhibition Hall uses the history of the Jin State as a narrative thread, showcasing over 600 years of Jin history through a wealth of precious cultural relics unearthed from the Jin Marquis tombs. The Excavation History Exhibition Hall displays the arduous journey, extensive research, and significant archaeological findings achieved by generations of scholars from Peking University’s School of Archaeology and Museology and the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology. The Site Exhibition Hall focuses on four groups of Jin Marquis and consort tombs and three chariot pits, reflecting the burial customs of the Jin State during the Western Zhou period.

Once completed, the Jin State Museum will be the first large-scale site museum in Shanxi Province integrating cultural relic collection, preservation, research, and heritage display. It is also the only platform in China that fully showcases Jin culture. The museum plays a vital role in inheriting and promoting traditional culture, highlighting the regional civilization of Shanxi characterized by Jin culture, and improving the structure of the province’s tourism industry.
