The Daya Zuoque Inkstone Research Institute in Panzhihua City is a specialized research institution approved by the municipal government to comprehensively develop Zuoque stone, enhance the quality of Zuoque inkstones, and create more exquisite masterpieces. It was officially established under the authorization of the city's vice mayor. The institute has multiple provincial-level master artisans, senior art technicians, master inkstone makers, and outstanding provincial-level artisans. Many of its creations have won prestigious awards, including silver, bronze, and excellence awards at the China Arts and Crafts Masters' Exposition, as well as gold, silver, and bronze prizes at the China Inkstone Masters' Competition. Its works have also been recognized as among China’s finest inkstone masterpieces.

Director Zhang Junsan, a Sichuan Provincial Master of Arts and Crafts, was born in February 1952 in Feicheng City, Shandong Province. He began his apprenticeship at age 15 under the renowned artisan Li Xianzhi, also known as "Swallow Lee San." He graduated from Beijing Forestry University in 1980 and started researching Zuoque inkstone creation in 1986. He excels in creative inkstone design and is widely known as an "inkstone aficionado." He advocates that one must first cultivate character before crafting inkstones and must read the stone before carving it. Though silent, the stone speaks volumes—its unique shape, texture, quality, and color reveal its distinct personality and yearn for a spiritual connection. Each natural inkstone is a one-of-a-kind piece, with only one optimal design. True inspiration strikes only when you love, understand, and connect with the stone. He believes creativity is the soul of an inkstone and insists on tailoring craftsmanship to the material rather than imposing rigid styles or patterns. He champions minimal carving to preserve the stone’s natural essence—where subtle carving appears uncarved, and no carving surpasses carving. His philosophy is harmony between human and stone, achieving a naturally perfect form. His creations have earned numerous national-level awards.
