The Red Army Long March Museum Commemorating the Crossing of Jiajin Mountain

The Red Army Long March Museum Commemorating the Crossing of Jiajin Mountain is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Red Army Long March Museum Commemorating the Crossing of Jiajin Mountain is located on the banks of the Qingyi River, west of Baoxing County’s urban area, covering an area of approximately 4,500 square meters. It was built to commemorate the epic Long March of the Red Army, promote the spirit of the Long March, inherit the fine traditions of the predecessors, and mark the 70th anniversary of the Red Army’s crossing of Jiajin Mountain and the 100th birthday of Comrade –. The entire museum consists of three parts: the Red Army Square, the thematic sculpture, and the illustrated fence depicting the Long March’s crossing of Jiajin Mountain.

The Red Army Square covers an area of 3,300 square meters and mainly consists of landscaped gardens and a leisure plaza. The green area features circular, rectangular, and irregular flower stands arranged in the shape of a torch, symbolizing how the spirit of the Red Army spread like wildfire across the land, shining as brightly as the sun and moon, and enduring forever with heaven and earth.

In the center of the square is the thematic sculpture. The main body of the sculpture is a massive stele, 6 meters wide, 2.5 meters thick, and 8.5 meters high. The stele employs three different artistic techniques: round sculpture, relief, and imitation bronze relief. On the southwest side of the stele, three figures are depicted using round sculpture: a Tibetan guide, a Red Army officer, and a Red Army soldier, representing the moment when Red Army soldiers, led by a local Tibetan, reached the summit of Jiajin Mountain. The lower edge of the stele is decorated with reliefs portraying four classic scenes from the Red Army’s crossing of Jiajin Mountain. The left side of the south face and the entire north face of the stele feature imitation bronze reliefs depicting groups of Red Army soldiers—some holding hands, some supporting one another, and others clutching horse tails—as they struggle through deep snow on steep mountain paths. These vivid images recreate the hardships of the crossing and the Red Army’s spirit of mutual aid, unity, and perseverance.

On the west side of the stele is an inscription titled “Monument of the Snow Mountain,” handwritten by the renowned professor Zhang Changyu from Sichuan Normal University in the style of a literary fu. The 400-character inscription, with its neat, symmetrical, concise, and precise wording, along with its passionate revolutionary romanticism, recreates the grandeur of the Long March and the crossing of Jiajin Mountain, while extolling the Red Army soldiers’ bravery, fearlessness, and indomitable revolutionary spirit in overcoming adversity.

From a distance, the entire thematic sculpture resembles a fluttering red flag, a towering snow-capped mountain, and also a monument. This perfectly embodies the theme that the Long March of the Red Army is both a banner and a monument.

Along the western edge of the Red Army Square is the illustrated fence. The fence consists of 110 deep-relief panels divided into three sections: the illustrated series depicting the Red Army’s crossing of Jiajin Mountain, memoirs and handwritten notes by older-generation proletarian revolutionaries about the Long March and the crossing, and carvings of cultural relics left by the Red Army in Baoxing. These specifically portray the Red Army’s three crossings of Jiajin Mountain and their entire combat history within the Baoxing region.

The Red Army Memorial Hall is located at the northern end of the square, covering an area of over 1,200 square meters, and is divided into the Red Army Long March & Jiajin Mountain Crossing Exhibition Hall and the – Sichuan Departure Exhibition Hall. The exterior design of the memorial hall is unique, blending the architectural styles of western Sichuan and Tibetan dwellings, reflecting Baoxing’s distinctive geographical environment and local customs as part of an ethnic corridor. From the outside to the inside, the memorial hall uses the “gray” color of the Red Army uniform as its dominant tone, creating a solemn, dignified, and profound atmosphere.

During the Long March, the Red Army left behind many heroic deeds and moving stories in Baoxing—including the three crossings of Jiajin Mountain, the departure from Sichuan, and the underground party member Xi Maozhao—planting the seeds of revolution here. Especially, the Red Army’s legacy of unity, courage, determination, and unyielding revolutionary heroism inspired generations of Baoxing people to carry on the mission, keep pace with the times, innovate, and strive for progress.
