The Jade Emperor Temple was first built in the ninth year of the Xining reign during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty (1076). The temple complex has three courtyards, with the First Mountain Gate, Second Mountain Gate, Gods’ Worship Pavilion, and the Jade Emperor Hall all aligned along a central axis. The layout is rectangular, measuring 110 meters from north to south and 32 meters from east to west, comprising 110 halls and pavilions with a total area of 3,520 square meters. It is a grand ancient architectural complex.

Perched atop Panxiu Mountain, the temple commands an imposing view and boasts a majestic presence. It was the largest and most influential Taoist temple in ancient Zezhou. The over 300 clay sculptures of Taoist deities form a unique and systematic artistic representation of the Chinese pantheon. Notably, the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions clay sculptures are unique artifacts among surviving ancient statues in China, reflecting the convergence of Chinese and Western sculptural art. It is a marvelous treasure trove of Taoist art, possessing significant historical and aesthetic value.

Among the Taoist deities, the “Supremely Majestic, Transcendent, and Natural Lord of the Mysterious Heaven, the Jade Emperor” (commonly known as the Jade Emperor) holds the highest rank. Hence, this temple is named the Jade Emperor Temple and is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
