Jianwu Stone Carvings

The Jianwu Stone Carvings are located at Wanshou Temple on Yupingdun in Jiuxi Town, Xingwen County. They consist of three round sculptures carved from bluish sandstone, representing the Three Saints of the West: one Buddha and two Bodhisattvas. Among them, Amitabha Buddha is seated in the lotus position on a waisted lotus pedestal, with a spiral topknot, long ears reaching the shoulders, a plump face, and a serene expression. He wears a sanghati robe over an open-front shawl and holds his hands together in front of his chest. The lower back of the statue bears an inscription reading “Made in the 25th year of the Wanli era (1597).” The Guanyin and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas are positioned on the left and right respectively, sharing a consistent carving style.

The Jianwu carvings are stone sculptures with a clear date of creation, well-preserved, and of high artistic quality. They hold significant value for the study of local religion and art.

To the east it borders Daba Miao Ethnic Township, to the south it adjoins Yunnan Province, to the west it connects to Shipai and Caoying townships in Gong County, and to the north it reaches Xianfeng and Yuxiu Miao Ethnic Townships. It covers an area of approximately 140 square kilometers, with elevations ranging from 580 to 1,369 meters. The terrain is mainly mountainous, characteristic of a typical southwestern basin.
